IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the change in some household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The table divides people by the type of house they live in and the number of family member they have.

We can see that the One Person house have seen a very slight increase from 1971 to 2007. there were similar percentages between 2001 and 2007.

The thing that stands out are the One-family-households and the couple house type as these don't have any data from all the years.

One thing to note is how there is a fluctuation in percentage in the Non dependent children house type as it went from 10 in 1971 to 11 in 1991 to 9 for two years straight. Same can be said for the Dependent children house type as it went from 52 in 1971 to 47 then 41 and falling in the final 2 years continuously.

A pattern can be noticed in all the types of houses is that every one of them have the same percentage in 2001 and 2007. showing no change has been recorded in this duration.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to adequately summarize the data. You have focused on minor details while missing the broader trends, such as the significant decline in 'One-family-households' or the overall shift in household structures. The description of the data is often inaccurate; for instance, you claim 'One-family-households' have no data, yet the table clearly provides figures for these categories. Furthermore, the analysis of the 'Non dependent children' and 'Dependent children' categories is superficial and lacks a clear comparison of the overall changes between 1971 and 2007. To improve, you must identify the most significant changes and support them with accurate data points rather than listing isolated fluctuations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear structure. It is written as a series of disconnected sentences rather than a cohesive report. There is a lack of logical progression between ideas, and the use of cohesive devices is very limited. For example, you start new points without transition words or logical connectors to link the observations. Paragraphing is absent, which makes the text difficult to follow. To improve, you should group related data points into distinct paragraphs—such as one for increasing trends and one for decreasing trends—and use linking words like 'In contrast,' 'Furthermore,' or 'Conversely' to guide the reader through your analysis.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive. You frequently use simple phrases like 'The thing that stands out' and 'One thing to note,' which are not appropriate for an academic report. There is also a lack of precision in describing trends; for example, you use 'house type' repeatedly instead of using more varied terminology like 'household category,' 'demographic group,' or 'living arrangement.' To reach a higher band, you need to incorporate more academic vocabulary to describe data, such as 'experienced a downward trend,' 'remained relatively stable,' or 'accounted for a significant proportion.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains several grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'the One Person house have seen' (should be 'has seen') and 'every one of them have' (should be 'has'). Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('there were similar...'). The sentence structures are mostly simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and proofreading for basic punctuation. Incorporating more complex structures, such as relative clauses or passive voice, would also help demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
