Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to summarise the data but fails to provide a clear overview or accurately report the main features. The description of the trends is often confusing, such as the reference to 'people who are not lucky in term of children', which is not appropriate for an academic report. Furthermore, the student incorrectly states that the table shows no information about couples, when the data clearly includes categories for couples with children. The information is often vague, and the lack of precise data points makes it difficult for the reader to understand the trends. To improve, focus on identifying the most significant changes and using the actual figures provided in the table to support your observations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The response lacks a logical structure. While there are paragraph breaks, the progression of ideas is disjointed. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as 'in sum up' (should be 'in summary') and 'as years passes'. The referencing is also unclear; for example, the phrase 'the same digit as behind' is confusing and does not effectively link back to previous information. The lack of clear transitions between sentences makes the text difficult to follow. To improve, use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. There is a reliance on informal or non-academic phrasing, such as 'not lucky in term of children' and 'the same digit as behind'. There are also frequent errors in word choice, such as 'raise' used as a noun instead of 'rise', and 'expand' used to describe a percentage. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information accurately. To improve, focus on learning academic collocations related to data description, such as 'a significant increase', 'a steady decline', or 'remained constant'. Avoid using informal language or overly simplistic descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The table illustrate', 'children that depends'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence structures. The use of articles is inconsistent, and there is a lack of complex sentence structures. Many sentences are poorly constructed, making the meaning unclear. For example, 'The number of the children that depend on their children' is logically confusing. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles. Practice writing clear, simple sentences before attempting more complex structures.
