Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table demonstrates the shifting trends in types of households located in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.

Overall it is evident that the traditional family structure consisting of couples and dependent children experienced a significant decline over the 36-year period, despite remaining the most common household type. Additionally, the couples with no children stood at 19% in the year 1971, and the proportion consistently increased till the year 2007. Moreover, the proportion of couples with non-dependent children fluctuated throughout the period of 36 years.

Subsequently, in the year 1971, the percentage of individuals living alone was 6%, which doubled to 12% in the year 2007.

Furthermore, the parents living alone represented the proportion of 4% in the year 1971 and tripled to reach aa peak of 12 % in the year 2007

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the data, including the decline in traditional family structures and the rise in single-person households. You successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons between the categories. However, the analysis could be improved by providing more specific data points for all categories mentioned; for instance, the 'couples with no children' and 'couples with non-dependent children' categories lack specific figures in the body paragraphs, which limits the depth of the report. To reach a higher band, ensure that every trend described is supported by the corresponding data from the table.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by category. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'To begin with', and 'Subsequently' helps guide the reader through the information. However, the transition between the final two sentences is slightly abrupt, and the paragraphing could be more balanced. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect the trends rather than relying on a list-like structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'shifting trends', 'prominent', and 'proportion' effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'showed an upward trend in 3 decades' (which is slightly awkward phrasing) and a typo ('aa peak'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to data reporting, such as 'experienced a steady increase' or 'remained relatively stable'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally accurate and communication is never impeded, there are some minor errors, such as the missing article in 'represented the proportion of 4%' and the awkward phrasing 'in the year 2007' repeated frequently. To achieve a higher score, aim for more variety in your sentence structures—for example, using participial phrases or relative clauses to combine ideas more fluidly. Ensure that you proofread for small errors like the double 'a' before 'peak'.
