Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the data, such as the decline in households with children and the rise in one-person households. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies in reporting the data. For example, stating that the percentage of one-person households was 6% in 1971 and 'double in last year' is factually incorrect based on the provided table. Furthermore, the claim that 'couple' was not introduced in the period is confusing and inaccurate. While the main trends are identified, the lack of precision in reporting the figures prevents a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'Moving further' and 'additionally'. The logical progression is frequently interrupted by grammatical errors and unclear referencing, making the flow somewhat disjointed. While there is an attempt to group information, the connections between sentences are not always smooth or logical, which limits the effectiveness of the overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic structures to describe trends. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'depend on children' instead of 'dependent children' and 'was decrease significant' instead of 'decreased significantly'. The student struggles to use precise terminology for describing data trends, which restricts the ability to convey information clearly. To improve, the student needs to learn standard collocations for reporting statistics and expand their range of verbs and adverbs used for describing change.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede clarity. There are consistent issues with verb tense and form, such as 'was decrease' and 'was increase', as well as problems with subject-verb agreement and article usage. Complex sentence structures are attempted but are almost always faulty, leading to confusion. The majority of the sentences contain errors, and the control over basic punctuation and sentence construction is weak. Significant focus on mastering basic sentence patterns and verb tenses is required.
