Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the data, but the analysis is significantly hampered by inaccurate reporting of the figures and a misunderstanding of the data categories. For instance, the claim that 'One Family and couple had not spent any percentage' is confusing and inaccurate based on the provided table. Furthermore, the description of trends is often imprecise, such as stating 'dependent children spent more household', which is grammatically unclear and factually confusing. While the response attempts to select key data points, the lack of clarity and the misinterpretation of the household types prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure you clearly identify the categories and describe the trends using accurate terminology.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as the repetitive use of 'in the following year' and 'in the following years'. The transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the progression of the data. While there is an overall attempt at a logical arrangement, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the repetitive sentence structure limit the flow of the response. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would significantly enhance the readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. Phrases like 'spent more household' and 'percentage increase by 4%' are used incorrectly, indicating a lack of precision in describing statistical data. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or an awareness of collocation. The student relies on basic vocabulary, and the misuse of terms like 'spent' instead of 'accounted for' or 'represented' hinders the clarity of the report. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on learning specific vocabulary for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained constant', or 'accounted for a significant proportion'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the lone parent had lowest percentage'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence construction. While there is an attempt to use complex sentences, they are often faulty, leading to a lack of clarity. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around numbers and commas. The majority of the sentences contain errors, which occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the data. Focusing on basic sentence structure and ensuring correct verb forms will help improve the accuracy of the writing.
