Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table illustrates the proportion of household types in Great Britain between 1971 and 2007.

Overall, the percentage of one person household increased throughout the period. The proportion of couples with dependent children remained the dominant group over the period, although its share declined steadily by 2007. In contrast, the percentage of couples with no children showed a consistent upward trend and remained stable in 2007. The exact pattern was followed by a group of a single parent. However, the proportion of couples with non-dependent children experienced a modest fluctuations, but remained relatively minor group.

In 1971, the one person group accounted for 6%, which increased to 8% in 1981, 11% in 1991 and reached 12% in 2001. This number remained unchanged in 2007. The percentage of couples with no children accounted for 19% in 1971. This figure increased slightly to 20% in 1981, 23% in 1991, and increased to a peak of 25% in 2001. This remained stable in 2007.

The proportion of the couples with dependent children, on the other hand, accounted for 52% in 1971, demonstrated as the most common household type. This number then decreased steadily to 47% in 1981, 41% in 1991, and further to 39% in 2001. This fell to a low of 36% in 2007. The percentage of the couples with non-dependent children represented 10% in 1971 and 1981. This number climbed to 11% in 1991, which again declined to 9% in 2001 and 2007. Nevertheless, the proportion of a single parent contributed 4% in 1971, which increased a bit to 6% in 1981 and 10% in 1991. This figure rose to 12% in 2001 and remained constant in 2007, showing a consistent upward trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the decline in couples with dependent children versus the rise in single-person households. The data is accurately reported, and the key features are highlighted effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that your overview is more synthesised rather than just listing trends; for example, you could explicitly contrast the dominant group at the start of the period with the most significant shifts by 2007. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt comprehensively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organised, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the data effectively. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'on the other hand', and 'nevertheless' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed data analysis. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is generally clear. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is not overly mechanical; some sentences could be combined to improve the flow of the narrative.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'consistent upward trend', 'modest fluctuations', and 'remained constant' are used accurately. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs like 'accounted for' and 'increased'. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for reporting data, such as 'constituted', 'comprised', 'surged', or 'witnessed a decline'. The vocabulary is appropriate for the task, and there are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of tense is consistent throughout the report. There are minor slips, such as 'a modest fluctuations' (should be 'modest fluctuations') and 'the one person group' (should be 'the one-person household group'). These are rare and do not hinder understanding. To improve, aim for more sophisticated complex structures, such as using participle clauses to describe trends, which would demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
