Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table illustrates the proportion of the household types in Great Britain between 1971 and 2007.

Overall, the percentage of the one-person households increased throughout the period. The percentage of the couples with dependent children remained the most dominant group over the period, although its share declined steadily by 2007. In contrast, the proportion of couples with no children showed a consistent upward trend. The exact pattern was followed by the single-parent households. Meanwhile, the percentage of couples withe non-dependent children experienced modest fluctuations, but remained a relatively minor group.

In 1971, one-person households accounted for 6%, which increased to 8% in 1981, 11% in 1991, and reached 12% in 2001. This number remained unchanged in 2007. However, the proportion of couples with no children contributed 19% in 1971. This figure increased slightly to 20% in 1981 and 23% in 1991. This further climbed to 25% in 2001 and remained stable in 2007. The percentage of couples with dependent children accounted for 52% in 1971, representing the most common household type. This number decreased steadily to 47% in 1981, 41% in 1991, and further declined to 39% in 2001. This figure fell to a low of 36% in 2007.

The percentage of the couples with non-dependent children, on the other hand, accounted for 10% in 1971 and 1981, then climbed to 11% in 1991. This again decreased to 9% in 2001 and 2007. Nevertheless, alone-parent households contributed 4% in 1971, which increased to 6% in 1981, and 10% in 1991. This number rose to 12% in 2001 and remained constant in 2007, showing an upward trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected key data points to support your summary. You accurately identified the dominant household type (couples with dependent children) and noted the contrasting trends for one-person and single-parent households. The comparison between categories is well-handled throughout the report. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview is even more integrated; for instance, you could explicitly contrast the decline of the largest group with the growth of the smaller ones in the opening summary. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', 'However', and 'Nevertheless' to link sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed data analysis. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is easy to follow throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of cohesive devices, which demonstrates a high level of control.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report, using terms like 'proportion', 'upward trend', 'modest fluctuations', and 'remained constant'. The word choice is generally precise and natural. There is a minor error in 'withe' (typo) and 'alone-parent' (should be 'single-parent'), but these do not impede communication. To improve, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or synonyms to describe the data, such as 'witnessed a steady decline' or 'accounted for a significant share'. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient to convey your points clearly and with some flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over tense and subject-verb agreement is strong. There are very few grammatical slips, such as the minor typo 'withe'. You successfully use complex structures like 'although its share declined steadily by 2007' and 'which increased to 8% in 1981'. Punctuation is generally accurate, aiding the clarity of your writing. The grammatical control is consistent, and the occasional minor errors do not detract from the overall quality of the response.
