Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While you have identified some key trends, the analysis is quite brief and lacks the depth required for a higher band. You have selected some main features, such as the decline in dependent children and the rise in one-person households, but the lack of sufficient detail and the failure to reach the word count limit mean the task is only partially addressed. To improve, ensure you provide a more comprehensive overview and include more specific data points to support your comparisons throughout the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical flow is somewhat disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and occasionally mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'While' and 'Additionally'. The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more naturally. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that the progression of information from the introduction to the conclusion is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'ratio increases' and 'kept increasing' are functional but lack the precision expected at higher levels. There are also some minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'household varieties' instead of 'household types'. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use a more varied range of vocabulary, including synonyms and more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a significant decline'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('the year between 1971 to 2007'), subject-verb agreement ('lone parent... ratio increases'), and punctuation. Some sentences are also awkwardly phrased, which occasionally hinders the clarity of the information. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect verb tenses. Increasing the variety of your sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you reach a higher band.
