Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table illustrates the change in some household types in Great Britain spanning the years 1971 to 2007.

Overall, two household types can be seen, one person and one-family households. One person household percentages have shown an increase over the years whereas fluctuations can be seen in one-family household percentages.

One person household percentage continuously increased from 6 in 1971 to 12 in 2001 and remained consistent till 2007.

A couple in one-family household may have no children, dependent children or non-dependent children. The percentage of a couple with no children kept increasing from 19 in 1971 to 25 in 2001 and was the same until 2007, whereas the percentage of a couple with dependent children kept decreasing from 52 in 1971 to finally 36 in 2007. Fluctuations are visible in the percentage of a couple with non-dependent children from 10 initially, increasing to 11 in 1991 and then 9 in the final years.

On the other hand, the percentage of a lone parent in one-family household increased from 4 in 1971 to 12 in 2001, keeping the same level until 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the data, including the overall trends and specific comparisons. You successfully identified the main categories and tracked their changes over the period. However, the overview is slightly underdeveloped; while you mention the two main household types, you could have highlighted the most significant trend, such as the decline in couples with dependent children versus the rise in lone parents. The data is presented accurately, and the comparison between categories is clear. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview provides a more comprehensive summary of the most striking trends rather than just stating that fluctuations occurred.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group related data effectively. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'whereas' and 'on the other hand,' to contrast information. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the overview and the first body paragraph could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing could be more varied to avoid repetitive sentence structures. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations,' 'consistent,' and 'spanning.' However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the reliance on 'percentage of' and 'increased/decreased.' To improve, try to incorporate more varied reporting verbs and nouns, such as 'witnessed a decline,' 'remained stable,' or 'accounted for.' While the current vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. However, there are minor grammatical issues, such as missing articles (e.g., 'One person household percentages' should be 'The percentage of one-person households'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'remained consistent till 2007.' While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the writing from reaching a higher level of grammatical sophistication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent article usage would improve your score.
