Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While you have identified some key features, such as the increase in one-person households and the decline in family households, the analysis is superficial. You have not provided a clear overview or a summary of the main trends as required by the task. Furthermore, the data interpretation is occasionally confusing, such as the reference to '50 percent increase' for one-person households, which lacks clarity regarding the base figures. To improve, ensure you provide a clear introductory overview and dedicate more space to comparing the data points rather than just listing them.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks a clear paragraph structure, appearing as a single block of text. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas; sentences are often disjointed, making the progression of information feel mechanical. For example, the transition between the one-person household data and the family household data is abrupt. To improve, you should organize your response into distinct paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on specific trends. Use linking words like 'in contrast,' 'furthermore,' and 'consequently' to improve the flow between your sentences and ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, often relying on basic terms like 'shows' and 'increase.' There are also errors in word choice, such as 'compromise' instead of 'comprises' or 'compares,' and 'varried' instead of 'varied.' The phrasing is often unnatural, which hinders the precision of your report. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained stable,' 'accounted for,' or 'witnessed a significant rise.' Focusing on accurate collocations will also help improve the clarity of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the' table), incorrect verb forms ('is varried'), and punctuation issues. Sentence structures are predominantly simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence construction. For instance, 'the data shows time period from 1971 to 2007' is missing necessary prepositions and articles. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structure, including subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Once you have a solid foundation, try to incorporate more complex structures, such as relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions, to vary your writing style.
