Student answer (Band 7.5)
The table illustrates the difference in some household types in Great Britain between 1970 to 2007.
Overall, couples with dependent children accounted for the largest proportion throughout the period, although them percentage declined considerably. By contrasts, one person households, couples without children and lone parent families all became more common, while the figure for couples with non-dependent children remained relatively stable.
In 1971, couples with dependent children were the dominant household type, accounting for 52% of the total. However, this figure fell steadily to 47% in 1981 and 41% in 1991, before reaching 36% in 2007. In contrast, the proportion of couples without children increased gradually from 19% to 25% over the same period.
The percentage of one-person households doubled from 6% in 1971 to 12% in 2001, before remaining unchanged in 2007. Similarly, lone-parent households increased considerably, rising from just 4% to 12%. By comparison, couples with non-dependent children showed little change, fluctuating between 9% and 11% throughout the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main trends and providing relevant comparisons. You have successfully highlighted the dominant category (couples with dependent children) and contrasted it with the growth in other household types. The data is accurately reported, and the overview clearly summarises the key shifts over the period. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are fully accurate; for instance, you mentioned one-person households reached 12% in 2001 and remained unchanged in 2007, which is a good use of data. The selection of information is logical and supports the overall summary well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'By comparison' are used appropriately to link ideas and guide the reader. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the different trends. The progression of ideas is clear throughout the response, and referencing is generally well-managed. The structure is coherent, and the flow of information is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information precisely, such as 'accounted for', 'declined considerably', and 'fluctuating'. There is a good attempt to use less common items, and the word choice is generally accurate. However, there is a minor grammatical error in the phrase 'them percentage', which should be 'their percentage'. Despite this, the range is adequate for the task, and the vocabulary is used with enough flexibility to describe the trends accurately. The minor slip does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used a variety of grammatical forms, such as participial phrases ('rising from just 4% to 12%') and complex sentences with subordinate clauses. While there are a few minor errors, such as the incorrect pronoun usage ('them percentage') and a slight error in the date range in the introduction ('1970 to 2007' instead of '1971'), the majority of sentences are error-free. The control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong, and the errors do not cause any difficulty for the reader.
