Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table compares the proportions of people living in different types of households in Great Britain across five distinct years from 1971 to 2007.

Overall, single-person households and one-family households without children or led by a lone parent experienced notable growth over the 36-year period. Conversely, traditional family structures comprising couples with dependent children saw a significant decline, despite remaining the most common household arrangement throughout.

In 1971, couples with dependent children formed the majority of the population at 52%. However, this figure decreased steadily over the period, dropping to 36% by 2007. In contrast, couples with no children saw their proportion rise consistently from 19% in 1971 to 25% in 2001, after which it stabilized through 2007. Couples living with non-dependent children remained relatively stable, fluctuating slightly between 9% and 11% across all years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a clear overview and highlights key trends, such as the decline in couples with dependent children and the growth of single-person households. However, the response is incomplete. It ends abruptly in the final paragraph with an unfinished sentence ('The remaining categories both doubled or tripled their shares over the time frame yeasr in'), failing to report the data for the remaining categories. Because the task is not fully completed and the final analysis is missing, the response cannot be awarded a high band. To improve, ensure all data groups are addressed and the summary is fully concluded.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'Conversely,' 'In 1971,' and 'In contrast' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is logical until the final sentence. The abrupt ending negatively impacts the overall coherence, as the final paragraph lacks a concluding thought or a complete analysis of the remaining data points. Improving the consistency of the structure and ensuring all sentences are finished will help achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic report. Phrases such as 'notable growth,' 'traditional family structures,' and 'fluctuating slightly' demonstrate a good range of vocabulary. There is an attempt to use precise language to describe trends. However, there is a spelling error ('yeasr') and the vocabulary range is somewhat limited by the unfinished nature of the final paragraph. To reach a higher band, incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure that all technical terms are used with precision throughout the entire response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'In contrast, couples with no children saw their proportion rise consistently from 19% in 1971 to 25% in 2001, after which it stabilized through 2007' is a well-constructed complex sentence. Grammar is generally accurate, and punctuation is handled well. The main issue is the incomplete final sentence, which is a significant grammatical error. Aside from this, the control of grammar is quite good, with few errors in the completed sections. Focusing on proofreading to catch typos and ensuring all sentences are complete will improve this score.
