Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While you have identified the main trends, the overview is somewhat simplistic. You successfully highlight the rise in 'alone' households and the decline in 'dependent children' families, but the data reporting is inconsistent. For instance, stating 'dependent children's family number was a half' is confusing and lacks precision. Furthermore, the analysis of the 'non-dependent children' category is brief. To improve, ensure you provide a clear, accurate summary of the data and meet the minimum length requirement to allow for full development of the main features.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'To embark with' are not standard academic English for starting a paragraph. Additionally, the transition between sentences is sometimes abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the description of the lone parent figures becomes difficult to follow due to awkward phrasing. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words will help create a smoother flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'number', 'increased', and 'decreased'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'alone person' (should be 'one-person households') and 'percentile' (which refers to statistical distribution rather than percentage). Some phrasing is unnatural, such as 'rose 12% in 1971 to 2007'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to trends and data, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', or 'remained stable', and ensure you use these terms in the correct context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There is a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. You frequently make errors with articles ('the table chart', 'the number of alone person') and prepositions ('by the time', 'in 1971 to 2007'). Punctuation is also problematic, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. While the meaning is generally understandable, these frequent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction hinder the overall quality of the writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage will significantly improve your clarity and accuracy.
