Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the data, such as the decline in dependent children and the rise in one-person households. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, stating that 'one-family households and couple type has not contributed any numbers' is factually incorrect based on the provided table, which shows data for these categories. Furthermore, the description of trends is sometimes confusing, such as saying 'minimal rose by 6%' instead of 'rose by 6 percentage points'. The overview is present but lacks clarity due to these misinterpretations, preventing a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused. For example, 'Although, one-family households...' is grammatically and logically disjointed. The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. While there is an attempt to use linking words like 'Furthermore' and 'In contrast', the logical progression is frequently interrupted by confusing statements about the data, making the overall flow feel somewhat disjointed and repetitive in the final paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The range of vocabulary is limited and often used inaccurately. Phrases like 'minimal rose by 6%' and 'surged by 19% in starting year' demonstrate a lack of control over collocations and precise reporting language. The student relies on basic descriptors and struggles to express trends effectively (e.g., 'significant dipped'). There are also issues with word choice, such as 'ended year' instead of 'the final year'. To improve, the student needs to learn specific vocabulary for describing data trends, such as 'increased by', 'decreased to', and 'remained stable'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('no children type shows', 'one-family households... has not contributed') and article usage ('the first household type one person'). Sentence structures are mostly simple or contain errors when attempting complexity, such as 'The last household type lone parent, it was 4%in 1971, rose by 12% in 2007', which is a run-on sentence. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. A greater focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading is required.
