Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a summary of the main features and makes relevant comparisons. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you correctly identify the overall trends, the data reporting is occasionally inaccurate or confusing. For instance, stating that 'no children' and 'lone parent' reached 12% for each is not clearly supported by the data provided in the prompt. Additionally, the description of the trends is sometimes vague, such as 'slightly went upward'. To improve, ensure that the data points cited are precise and that the comparison between categories is more clearly articulated to highlight the significant shifts over the 36-year period.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as 'In detail' and 'On the other side'. The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is functional, but the flow within the paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the data points more fluidly. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to track which category is being discussed in the final paragraph.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. Phrases such as 'most preferable', 'most liked', and 'consistent downfall trend' are not entirely natural in an academic context. There is a reliance on basic descriptors, and some word choices are slightly inaccurate, such as 'alteration' instead of 'change' or 'shift'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise academic vocabulary related to trends and data, such as 'significant decline', 'gradual increase', or 'fluctuated between'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing articles (e.g., 'in year 1971'), incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'reached at 25%'), and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'the lowest amount in terms of following'). While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions when describing data will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
