PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The tabular form of data given below illustrates the shift in some of the household kinds in Great Britian between 1971 and 2007.

Overall, the table explains the difference between one person and one-family households, along with various forms of family. The percentage of households having dependent children was highest among all forms of households both in 1971 and 2007. On the other hand, the proportion of households was lowest for a household bearing a lone parent in 1971 whereas in 2007, the number was lowest for both a lone-parent household and a one person household.

The percentages of people living in a one person household, a couple with no children household, and a lone parent household increased gradually from 1971 to 2007. Interestingly, the proportion for a household bearing a couple having non-dependent children remained constant for a decade between 1971 and 1981 and after showing a slight increase from 1981 to 1991, it declined from 1991 to 2007.

Comparing to it, a household having a couple with dependent children saw a sharp decline from 1971 towards the end of 2007, as the percentage in 1991 was 52, while it became 36 in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data well, identifying key trends and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the overall dominance of households with dependent children and noted the contrasting trends between different categories. However, the analysis of the data is slightly inconsistent; for instance, the claim that the lone-parent household was the lowest in 2007 is not fully supported by the provided figures, which show other categories like 'one person' having different values. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points cited are accurate and that you consistently compare the categories across the entire time frame provided in the table.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand,' 'Interestingly,' and 'Comparing to it' to link your points. However, the transition 'Comparing to it' is slightly unnatural; 'In comparison' or 'By contrast' would be more appropriate. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be improved by more sophisticated linking phrases to better connect the trends described.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion,' 'illustrates,' and 'declined' appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'household kinds' (should be 'types') and 'bearing a lone parent' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but some collocations are not entirely natural. To improve, focus on using more precise academic terminology to describe statistical changes, such as 'fluctuated' or 'remained stable,' rather than repeating 'household' frequently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'The tabular form of data given below illustrates...' (the 'below' is unnecessary as the table is provided) and 'Comparing to it' (which is a grammatical error). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for more variety in your complex sentence structures and ensure that your subject-verb agreement and prepositional usage are consistently accurate throughout the text.
