PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table below illustrates the change in some people in household by type of household and family in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.
Overall, it is seen that there is a increasing percentage in couple with no children, one person and lone parent. But in comparison to dependent children and non- dependent children there is a clear decrease in percentage.
Starting with one person family it is clearly seen increasing gradually with 6% in 1971 and 12% in 2007. Next, couples with no children also has a massive upgrade in the percentage as in 1971 there were 19% with no children and in 2007 25% had no children. Lone parent also increased, in 1971 there were 4% lone parents and in 2007 12%.
Moving to couples with dependent children had a decline. In 1971 couples were 52% and in 2007 it decreased to 36%. Lastly, couples with non-dependent children also decreased, in 1971 there were 10% but in 2007 there were 9%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the data and provides a clear overview. You have successfully identified the trends for all categories, such as the increase in one-person households and the decline in couples with dependent children. However, the overview could be more precise; for instance, instead of saying 'a increasing percentage', you should specify that some categories saw growth while others experienced a decline. The data is generally accurate, though the phrasing 'massive upgrade' is informal and not suitable for an academic report. To improve, ensure you compare the categories more explicitly rather than just listing the changes for each one individually.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'Starting with', 'Next', and 'Moving to' are functional but basic. To reach a higher band, try to integrate more sophisticated linking words or phrases to connect your sentences and ideas more fluidly. Additionally, ensure that referencing is precise; for example, 'couples with no children also has a massive upgrade' lacks a clear subject-verb agreement and could be linked more smoothly to the previous sentence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. You rely on simple descriptors like 'increasing', 'decrease', and 'upgrade'. The term 'upgrade' is incorrectly used here; it implies an improvement in quality rather than a statistical rise. Using more academic vocabulary such as 'proportion', 'fluctuation', or 'significant growth' would enhance the quality of your writing. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'some people in household' instead of 'household types'. Expanding your range of synonyms for trends will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'there is a increasing percentage' should be 'an increasing percentage', and 'couples with no children also has' should be 'have'. Additionally, 'couples with dependent children had a decline' is grammatically awkward; it would be better phrased as 'The proportion of couples with dependent children experienced a decline'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score as they indicate a lack of consistent control over complex structures.
