The table below shows the change in some household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The table illustrates changes in the proportions of people living in different types of households in Great Britain between 1971 and 2007.

Overall, the proportion of people living with dependent children decreased considerably over the period, while the percentages of those living alone, as a couple without children, or in lone-parent households generally increased. The figure for people living with non-dependent children remained relatively stable.

In 1971, households with dependent children accounted for the largest proportion, at 52%. However, this figure declined steadily to 47% in 1981, 41% in 1991, 39% in 2001, and finally 36% in 2007. In contrast, the percentage of people in households consisting of a couple without children rose from 18% to 25% over the same period.

The proportion of one-person households also increased significantly, doubling from 6% in 1971 to 12% in 2001, before remaining unchanged in 2007. Similarly, the percentage of people in lone-parent households tripled, rising from just 4% to 12%. Finally, households with non-dependent children showed little overall change, fluctuating between 9% and 11% throughout the period.
