Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the data, but the presentation is somewhat disjointed. While you identify the highest and lowest categories, the selection of data is inconsistent. For instance, you provide specific figures for 1971 and 1981 but become increasingly vague in the final paragraph, using phrases like 'similar pattern was followed' without sufficient supporting data. To improve, ensure you provide a more balanced overview of the trends across the entire period rather than listing data points in a way that feels like a raw data dump. The summary of trends is present but lacks the analytical depth required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hampered by awkward phrasing and a lack of cohesive devices. Transitions between sentences are often missing or mechanical, such as 'In third phase' or 'Opposite to it'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of data points. To improve, use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus rather than just listing years chronologically.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'household', 'type', and 'percentage'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'proportion of change' (which is inaccurate as the table shows the proportion of household types) and 'independent children' (which is a misinterpretation of the data labels). To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'accounted for'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly regarding article usage ('in UK', 'of household'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or lack necessary prepositions, such as '52 were of with dependent children'. While the meaning is generally understandable, these errors are persistent and distract the reader. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for missing articles and prepositions. Increasing the use of complex sentence structures would also help, provided they are used accurately.
