Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The table illustrates changes in the proportions of the people living in the different types of household and families in Great Britain between 1971 and 2007.
Overall, the proportion of people living alone and those in childless couple increased considerably over the period. In contrast, the percentage of people living with dependent children declined steadily. The figures for non-dependent children remained relatively stable, while lone parent households became more common.
In 1971, 52% of people lived in households with dependent children, making this the largest category. However, this figure fell consistently to 47% in 1981, 41% in 1991, 39% in 2001, 36% in 2007. By comparison, the proportion living in couples without children rose from 19% to 25%., reaching 25% in both 2001 and 2007. There was also a significant increase in the proportion of people living alone. This figure double from 6% in 1971 to 12% in 2001 and 2007. Similarly, the percentage of people in lone-parent households rose substantially, from just 4% in 1971 to 12% in 2001 and 2001.
Finally, households containing non-dependent children showed little overall change, fluctuating between 9% and 11% throughout the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main trends and making relevant comparisons. You have successfully highlighted the key shifts, such as the decline in households with dependent children and the rise in single-person and lone-parent households. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. However, there is a minor data error in the final paragraph where you mention '2001 and 2001' instead of '2001 and 2007'. Despite this, the main features are well-selected and supported by the provided figures, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'By comparison', and 'Similarly' effectively to link ideas and guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of household types. The progression of information is smooth, and the referencing is generally clear. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are transcribed accurately, as the error in the final paragraph slightly disrupts the flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information precisely. Phrases like 'proportions of the people', 'declined steadily', and 'fluctuating between' are used appropriately. You also show an ability to use less common items such as 'non-dependent' and 'considerably'. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To improve further, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' to avoid repetition, and ensure that all numerical data is transcribed without typographical errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. For instance, the use of participial phrases and comparative structures shows good control. There are a few minor slips, such as 'This figure double' (should be 'doubled') and the repetition of '2001' in the final sentence of the third paragraph. These are minor and do not impede communication. Overall, the grammatical control is strong, and the variety of structures is sufficient for this task.
