Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to adequately address the task requirements. While it mentions the time period and the topic, the summary of main features is largely inaccurate and confusing. The student struggles to interpret the data correctly, often citing figures that do not align with the provided table (e.g., mentioning a '52%' figure for dependent children which is not clearly supported by the data). The overview is vague and fails to highlight the significant trends, such as the rise in one-person households or the decline in specific family types. The response lacks a clear, logical selection of data points, making it difficult for the reader to grasp the main trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The essay is poorly organized, and the progression of ideas is unclear. While there are paragraph breaks, the content within them is disjointed and lacks logical flow. Cohesive devices are used incorrectly or in a mechanical, repetitive fashion (e.g., 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore'), which does not help to connect the ideas meaningfully. The referencing is often confusing, and the lack of clear topic sentences makes it difficult to follow the writer's argument. The overall structure does not facilitate a smooth reading experience.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary is very limited and often misused, which significantly hinders communication. There is frequent repetition of basic words like 'percentage', 'value', and 'household'. The student struggles with collocations and word choice, such as 'illustrates about' (which is grammatically incorrect) and 'peak value is 12 and low value is 6', which is an awkward way to describe data trends. The lack of precise terminology for describing statistical changes (e.g., 'increased steadily', 'fluctuated', 'remained stable') makes the description of the graph very basic and inaccurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede understanding. There are significant issues with sentence structure, including run-on sentences and fragments. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, and there are errors in basic punctuation and capitalization (e.g., 'great Britain'). The use of complex structures is attempted but is almost always faulty, leading to confusion. The lack of control over basic grammar, such as the misuse of 'it's' for 'its' and incorrect preposition usage, makes the writing difficult to read and lowers the overall quality of the response.
