Student answer (Band 6.0)

This tables provides data of modification of household sorts from 1971 to 2007 in Great Britain.

This graph shows data in percentage of each year from 1971 to 2007 of 5 different types of household: One person, couple with no children, couple with dependent children, couple with non-dependent children and lone parent.

looking at the details, first looking at the one person household type, its percentage steadily increased with time from 6 to 12 percent. For type, couple with no children, its percentage values increased with time from 19% to 25%. On the other hand, for couple with dependent children, its percentage decreased slowly with years from 52 to 36. Besides that, as we look at data of couples with non-dependent children , it shows something different, its percentage increased from 10 to 11 in 1991 but then decreased dramatically to 9 in 2001. However, when we see data of lone parents, its percentage increased constantly with value of 2 till 2001 and then remains constant till 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all categories provided in the table and identifies key trends. However, the overview is missing; a summary of the most significant changes (such as the decline in families with dependent children versus the rise in single-person households) is essential for a higher band. The data reporting is generally accurate, though some figures are presented without units (e.g., '6 to 12 percent' is clear, but '52 to 36' lacks the percentage sign). To improve, ensure you provide a clear, distinct overview paragraph that highlights the main trends rather than just listing data points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'looking at', 'its percentage'). The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. While there is a logical progression from one category to the next, the lack of sophisticated linking words makes the flow feel a bit disjointed. Improving the variety of transition signals and ensuring better paragraph structure would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'increased', 'decreased', and 'percentage'. There are also some awkward phrasings, such as 'modification of household sorts' and 'its percentage values increased with time'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate a wider range of synonyms and more precise collocations related to data description, such as 'experienced a steady growth', 'witnessed a downward trend', or 'remained relatively stable'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'This tables provides' (subject-verb agreement) and 'its percentage increased constantly with value of 2' (missing articles). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is often repetitive. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
