Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the data, such as the decline in dependent children and the rise in one-person households. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, you state there was 'no such record of couples and one family households,' which contradicts the provided table. Furthermore, the description of the data is somewhat fragmented, and the comparison between categories is underdeveloped. To improve, ensure you accurately transcribe the figures from the table and focus on highlighting the most significant trends rather than listing individual data points without clear synthesis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'with the passage of time.' Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between different household types. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently,' 'in contrast,' 'meanwhile') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the data trends.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'figure,' 'record,' and 'value.' There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the percentage of one person was about the 6,' which is grammatically awkward and imprecise. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion,' 'fluctuated,' 'remained stable,' or 'accounted for.' Expanding your range of synonyms will help you avoid repeating the same phrases throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'in the Great Britain' (incorrect article usage), 'it gradually decreases' (tense inconsistency), and 'the lone parents percentage was at the lowest among from the rest' (redundant prepositions). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing historical data. Proofreading for basic errors like missing articles or incorrect prepositions will significantly enhance the accuracy of your writing.
