IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the change in some household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The table compares, the percentage of people living in different households in Great Britain between 1971 and 2007.

Overall, it is clear that households with dependent children accounted for the highest proportion throughout the period, although it declined considerably. In contrast, the proportion of one-person, households, childless couples and lone parent households generally increased, while the figure for non-dependent children remained relatively stable.

Looking first at households with dependent children, their proportion declined steadily from 52% in 1971 to 36% in 2007, making this the largest category throughout the period. By contrast, the figure for households with no children rose from 19% to 25% over the same period. As a result, the gap between these two categories narrows considerably.

Turning to the remaining categories, the proportions of one-person and lone-parent households both increased over the period, rising from 6% to 12% and from 4% to 12%, respectively. Although one-person households were more common initially, both categories reached 12% by 2007. Meanwhile, the proportion of people living in households with non-dependent children showed little overall change, rising slightly to 11% in 1991 before falling to 9% in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively summarizes the main features of the table. You have identified the key trends, such as the decline in households with dependent children and the growth in one-person and lone-parent households. The comparisons are relevant and well-supported by the data provided. You have successfully highlighted the narrowing gap between categories and noted the stability of the non-dependent children category. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the overall trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed and that the distinction between categories is always clear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central focus, moving from an overview to specific details. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Looking first at', 'By contrast', and 'Turning to' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The flow of information is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the trends accurately, such as 'accounted for', 'declined considerably', 'remained relatively stable', and 'narrowed'. The use of 'respectively' is a good example of precise language. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, it is generally standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate a slightly wider range of less common lexical items or more sophisticated collocations to describe the data trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although one-person households were more common initially, both categories reached 12% by 2007.' There are very few errors, and those present do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally accurate, although there is a minor error in the first sentence with an unnecessary comma after 'compares'. Overall, the sentence structures are varied and accurate.
