PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The tabular data illustrates the information about the household types according to the number of individuals in a house from the duration of 1971 to 2007.

Overall there has been fluctuation throughout the time but the percentage of single persons, couples with no childs and lone parents has grown whether the fraction of families with dependent childs and non-dependent childs has decreased.

In 1971 single persons were only 6% of the total fraction which rose to 8% in next decade and arrived to 11% in 1991. After that it reached to 12% in 2001 and remained constant by 2007. However, a constant growth has been seen in couples with no childs. They contribute 19% of total population in 1971 which rose upto 23% by the year 1991 and achieved 25% by 2001 and remained steady till 2007. The fraction of lone parent also faced a growing pattern. It was standing at only 4% in 1971 but raise upto 10% by the year 1991 and approached to 12% in 2001 and remained still by the year 2007.

Percentage of familes with dependent childs has decreased throughout the period, they were standing at 52% of population in 1971 but fell down to 47% in next decade and faced a countinuous dip till 2007 and ended up at 36% of total population. Total fraction of families with non-dependent childs has also decreased very slightly during this period from 10% to 9% throughout the time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends and providing relevant data points. You have clearly highlighted the growth in single-person households and the decline in families with dependent children. However, the overview is slightly weak; while it mentions fluctuations, it could be more precise by explicitly stating the most significant trends (e.g., the shift from large family units to smaller households). The data is generally accurate, though ensure that you always include the unit of measurement (percentages) consistently when describing the figures to avoid ambiguity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'After that', and 'throughout the period' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the categories more effectively (e.g., grouping all growing trends together vs. declining ones). Referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a more natural progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuation', 'constant growth', and 'continuous dip'. There are some minor errors in word choice and pluralization, such as 'childs' (which should be 'children') and 'fraction' (which is sometimes used where 'proportion' or 'percentage' would be more precise). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and variety required for a higher band score. Focusing on more precise collocations will help improve your lexical precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'they were standing at 52%' instead of 'they stood at 52%', and 'raise upto' instead of 'rose to'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are instances where sentence structure could be more varied to improve the flow. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
