Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to adequately summarise the data. Instead of selecting and reporting main features or making meaningful comparisons, the writer provides a repetitive, year-by-year list that lacks analytical depth. The description of the data is mechanical and fails to highlight significant trends, such as the decline in one-family households or the rise in one-person households. Furthermore, the response is incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence. Because the report does not present a clear overview or effectively synthesise the information provided in the table, it does not meet the requirements for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The organisation is highly repetitive and lacks logical progression. The writer uses a rigid, formulaic structure for each year (e.g., 'In 1971... In 1981...'), which creates a monotonous reading experience. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas or show relationships between the different household types. Paragraphing is also problematic; the introduction and the body are not clearly separated, and the final sentence is left hanging, which disrupts the flow of information. The overall arrangement is mechanical rather than coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. The writer relies heavily on phrases like 'the given table shows', 'in the table', and 'had the highest percentage'. There is little attempt to use a range of vocabulary to describe trends or changes, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'experienced a decline', or 'accounted for'. The phrasing is basic and lacks the precision required for an Academic Task 1 report. The repetition of 'one-family households in which the dependent children were present' is particularly cumbersome and indicates a lack of lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammatical range is limited, consisting mostly of simple, repetitive sentence structures. While there are few major errors that impede communication, the lack of complex structures is evident. The writing suffers from awkward phrasing, such as 'the comprising percentage the household type held on that time' and 'the percentages relatively remain equal'. Punctuation is generally functional, but the incomplete final sentence is a significant issue. To improve, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of sentence types, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses, and improve the accuracy of prepositional usage.
