Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response provides a clear overview of the main trends and selects relevant data points to support the summary. You successfully identified the key increases and decreases, such as the rise in one-person households and the decline in dependent children. However, the report lacks a more analytical approach to comparing the categories. For instance, you could have highlighted that while one-person households grew, they remained a smaller proportion compared to the dominant category of dependent children. To reach a higher band, ensure you group data more effectively rather than listing figures chronologically, and provide a more comprehensive comparison between the household types throughout the period.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', and 'In the contrast', which help the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of 'In the contrast' is grammatically incorrect (it should be 'In contrast'). Additionally, the transition between sentences is sometimes mechanical, relying heavily on listing data points. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'declined sharply', and 'remained stable'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'One-person in household type' (should be 'one-person households') and 'the figure of lone parent' (should be 'the figure for lone parents'). The repetition of 'the percentage of' at the start of many sentences limits the sophistication of your writing. To improve, try to vary your sentence structures and use more precise terminology to describe statistical changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'reached to 23%' is incorrect (it should be 'reached 23%'), and 'then fall to 47%' should be 'then fell to 47%' to maintain consistent past tense. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'in the whole period' (should be 'throughout the whole period'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, they are frequent enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range.
