Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the data from the table provided, but it suffers from a significant limitation in task completion. Firstly, as noted in the length check, the essay falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 135 words, which directly impacts the breadth of coverage. Furthermore, the writing stops abruptly mid-sentence at the end of the text ('No children household type rem'), meaning the overview and key comparisons are incomplete. While the student correctly identifies some general trends such as the dominance of dependent children households and the lowest proportions for lone parents, key details are omitted or described with imprecise language. Because the response is underlength and unfinished, it fails to fully address all parts of the task, earning a band score of 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some basic attempts at organisation, but the overall progression is disrupted by faulty formatting and incomplete sentences. The student attempts to use paragraphing, but the text is broken into short, disjointed blocks rather than a cohesive report structure. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively (e.g., 'On one hand', 'Furthermore', 'Moreover'), and referencing is occasionally unclear. Because the response is incomplete, ending abruptly, there is no logical conclusion or smooth flow to the end of the piece. Paragraphing and logical sequencing are insufficient, leading to a band score of 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate vocabulary for discussing statistical data, using terms such as 'proportion', 'dominant type', and 'top the list'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'household styles', 'no-children houses', and 'Lone parent style household'. Furthermore, spelling and capitalization errors occur throughout the text, including lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences ('overall', 'the dependent children') and missing spacing ('1971as', '12% the highest'). The range of vocabulary is restricted and repetitive, making it difficult to achieve a higher score. This corresponds to a band score of 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammatical structures attempted are generally simple, with some rudimentary attempts at complex forms. However, accuracy is poor, featuring frequent errors such as missing articles ('contribute smallest proportion', 'share same percentages'), incorrect prepositions ('in Great Britain between 1971 to 2007'), and tense confusion. There are also sentence boundary issues and punctuation errors. The unfinished final sentence ('No children household type rem') further highlights a lack of syntactic control under pressure. Because these errors occur frequently and can cause some difficulty for the reader, the appropriate band score is 5.0.
