Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers all the main categories shown in the chart and attempts to report key figures and trends from 1971 to 2007, such as noting that dependent children remained the highest category and lone parents the lowest. However, the student struggles significantly with accurate data reporting. For instance, the text claims that 'Dependent childern remain the highest throughout the period, whereas Lone parent was the lowest in household and family' which is generally true, but the specific data citations contain numerous inaccuracies. Furthermore, some data points are garbled, such as '36 accounted for 2007' or confusing percentages with years. There is a lack of a clear, overarching overview beyond a very basic opening statement, and key comparisons are largely absent. This aligns closely with Band 5, where the task is addressed partially, and details tend to be inaccurate or inadequately presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay attempts a paragraph structure, separating different household types into distinct sentences or short paragraphs, but the organization is chaotic and lacks clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, resulting in disjointed sentences like 'in the session of no children, 19 percent was represented for 1971, followed ny 20 percent in 1981.' Referencing is frequently unclear, and the mechanical listing of data makes the flow extremely bumpy. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with erratic line breaks and sentence groupings that disrupt the logical flow of ideas. This corresponds to Band 5, where there is some organization, but progression is lacking and cohesive devices are inadequate or inaccurate.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, relying heavily on numbers, percentages, and simplistic verbs like 'rose', 'was', 'made up', and 'showed'. There are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'assigned table chart' instead of 'given table', 'In the term of one person' instead of 'In terms of one-person households', and 'in the session of no children' instead of 'in the category of households with no children'. Spelling errors also appear, such as 'childern' and 'ny' instead of 'by'. The range of vocabulary is limited and barely adequate for describing data, fitting the Band 5 descriptor where noticeable errors cause some difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex structures, but these attempts are frequently faulty. There are major grammatical and punctuation issues throughout the response, including lowercase beginnings of sentences (e.g., 'overall,', 'in the term', 'in the session', 'the highest number'), missing subjects and verbs, and awkward phrasing such as 'again decrease 2 percent in 2001 and become 39.' Punctuation is haphazard, with spaces before commas and periods. Errors are frequent and often cause strain for the reader, although the general topic remains just about decipherable. This sits firmly at Band 5.
