Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table illustrates the percentage distribution of people living in different household and family types in Great Britain, spanning from 1971 to 2007.

Overall, a noticeable trend is that households comprising couples with dependent children declined steadily throughout the period. In contrast, the percentage of one-person households, couples without children, and lone-parent families increased, indicating a significant change in family structure over the 36-year period.

In 1971, couples with dependent children accounted for largest proportion of households, at 52%. However, this figure fell consistently, reaching 47% in 1981, 41% in 1991, 39% in 2001, and finally 36% in 2007. In contrast, couples with no children experienced a gradual increase in the percentage, from 19% in 1971 to 20% in 1981 and 23% in 1991, before reaching 25% in 2001 and remained the same after that. Meanwhile, the proportion of couples with non-dependent children witnessed slight fluctuations between 9% and 11%.

Similarly, the percentage of one-person households

doubled from 6% in 1971 to 12% in 2001, which remain unchanged in 2007. Likewise, the proportion of lone-parent households surged from 6% in 1971 to 10% in 1991, before reaching 12% in both years, 2001 and 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively covers all parts of the task by summarizing the main trends and making relevant comparisons across the data. The student presents a clear overview stating that couple-led households with dependent children declined, while other categories generally rose. Key features are accurately selected and supported with precise figures from the table, such as the drop in households comprising couples with dependent children from 52% in 1971 to 36% in 2007. The information is reported logically without any significant omissions or inaccurate data interpretations, fulfilling the requirements for Task Achievement at a high level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Ideas are logically sequenced and the report features a clear overall progression. The response is well-structured with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used appropriately and effectively, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'Meanwhile', to guide the reader through the data comparisons. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, and referencing is handled accurately throughout, contributing to a smooth and natural flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally precise range of vocabulary for the task, utilizing terms such as 'percentage distribution', 'fluctuation', and 'proportion'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of collocation and style. There are, however, occasional minor lapses in word choice or phrasing, such as 'remained the same after that' instead of a more academic alternative, and minor tense or form slips in 'which remain unchanged in 2007'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the statistical trends clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and participial phrases successfully. While the majority of sentences are grammatically sound and control over grammar is generally good, there are a few minor errors. For instance, 'which remain unchanged in 2007' lacks the appropriate past tense form ('remained'), and 'experienced a gradual increase in the percentage' has a slightly awkward prepositional choice compared to 'experienced a gradual increase in percentage'. These infrequent errors do not impede communication.
