Student answer (Band 6.5)
The data table illustrates the change in proportion of some household types in Great Britain between 1971 and 2007.
Overall, the proportion of households with dependent children was by far the highest in all years, whereas the percentage was lower for lone parent's households in all years, with 2001 and 2007 being the exceptions.
In 1971, the proportion of houses having one person was 6%, while it was 19% for homes having no children. The percentage was highest for dependent children's households, featuring at 52%, but it was 10% for non-dependent children and 4% for lone parent. In 1981, households with one person featured 8%, while the figure stood at 20% for no children's households. However, the percentage was 47% for households having dependent children, and it was 10% and 6% for non-dependent and lone parent's households, respectively.
In 1991, the proportion of households with one person stood at 11%, and it surged to 23% for the households having no children. For dependent and non-dependent children the figure stood at 41% and 11%, respectively, whereas it was 10% for lone parent. In 2001 and 2007, the percentage for all types of household was same, 12% for one person, 25% for no children, 9% for non-dependent children and 12% for lone parent, with dependent children being the only exception, standing at 39% and 36% in both years, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate provides a clear overview and successfully summarises the main trends and features of the data from 1971 to 2007. The response covers all the household categories presented in the table and makes appropriate comparisons between them, such as highlighting that households with dependent children were by far the highest in all years. Key data points are selected and reported accurately, supporting the general trends described. The overview is placed logically at the beginning, and data is integrated well across the body paragraphs. The task is fully and appropriately addressed according to the requirements for Academic Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph, followed by a general overview, and then moves into detailed chronological reporting of the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different years or groups of years. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'while', 'however', and 'respectively' are employed reasonably well to link ideas and compare figures. Although some referencing and transitional phrasing can occasionally feel a bit mechanical—such as starting multiple consecutive paragraphs with time markers like 'In 1971,' and 'In 1981,'—the overall logical structure remains clear and easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a data-report task, successfully using terms such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'surged', and 'stood at'. There are some successful attempts at less common phrasing, although much of the language remains fairly standard and repetitive (e.g., repeating 'the proportion of' and 'the figure stood at' frequently). Word choice and collocation are generally accurate, and spelling is correct throughout. While it does not reach the wide flexibility required for higher bands, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'while it was 19% for homes having no children', 'with dependent children being the only exception'). Grammatical accuracy is generally high, with frequent error-free sentences. Control of tense consistency and relative clauses is solid. There are only very minor awkward phrasings or slight preposition choices, but these do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader. The punctuation is handled accurately throughout the report.
