Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by reporting several features from the chart, such as the trends for one-person households and families with children. However, the response suffers from significant misinterpretations of the data, which pulls the score down. For instance, the student states that couples with no children reached the highest figure and later mentions that non-dependent juveniles experienced a significant decline, which does not accurately reflect the specific categories and figures in the table. While an overview is attempted, key trends are inaccurately described, leading to an incomplete and partially inaccurate coverage of the prompt. Therefore, the response aligns best with Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, informal filler phrases such as 'At a fleeting glance', and confusing sentence structures. Cohesive devices are often misapplied or mechanical, and referencing is unclear at times, making the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion lacks smooth transitions. These issues place the response firmly in Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate to data description, including terms like 'proportion', 'tendency', and 'alterations'. However, there are numerous inappropriate word choices and spelling/collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'tabular chart', 'varities', 'juvelines', 'phenomeon', and 'reduction in the timespan'. Less common vocabulary is attempted but frequently inaccurate or awkward ('ration increase by double', 'constantly stay at 25% untl'). These lexical inaccuracies occasionally impede communication, justifying a Band 5 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and preposition usage, such as 'parents with having no relatives also presented with the steadily increasing' and 'families with both dependent and non-dependent children have experienced a reverse phenomeon'. Punctuation is also faulty, with persistent spacing errors before punctuation marks. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect the Band 5 descriptor.
