Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task by reporting changes in household types from the table. However, it fails to present a clear or well-structured overview, and the reporting of data is overly mechanical and chronological, listing figures year-by-year without clear selection or comparison of main trends. For instance, the writer states that 'in year 1971 one person has only 6 percent' and lists subsequent years exhaustively. While some key categories like dependent children and one-person households are mentioned, the lack of a proper overview and synthesis means the requirements of Band 6 are not fully met. Overall, the task achievement is limited by poor data selection and a lack of comparative analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response lacks a clear paragraph structure, being condensed into a poorly separated introduction/overview and a single massive block of text. Cohesive devices are repetitive and mechanical, relying heavily on transitional phrases like 'Firstly, in year 1971...', 'In year 1981...', 'In year 1991...', and 'Lastly...'. There is no logical progression between ideas beyond this chronological listing, and referencing is frequently confusing (e.g., 'while for no children, and lone parent percentage only increased by one person'). Consequently, the overall arrangement feels disjointed, aligning with Band 4 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive (e.g., 'increase', 'decrease', 'percentage', 'year'). There are several noticeable word-choice and spelling errors, such as 'Dependendent', 'percentgae', and 'loe parents' for lone parents. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the prompt, but inaccurate collocations and limited lexical flexibility mean that communication is occasionally strained. The range is minimally adequate to convey basic data points, but falls short of a solid Band 5 due to frequent errors in spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple and awkwardly constructed compound sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, such as missing articles ('in year 1971 one person has...'), incorrect preposition usage, and faulty tense consistency (e.g., mixing past data descriptions with present tense verbs like 'illustrates greater'). Complex structures are rarely attempted, and when they are, they contain noticeable errors that can cause difficulty for the reader, placing the response firmly in the Band 4 category.
