The table below shows the change in some household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table shows the percentage of people living in different household types in Great Britain between 1971 and 2007.

Overall, household consisting of dependent children remained the most common type throughout the period, although its percentage declined steadily whereas one person household, couple without children and lone parent families became more common over time.

In 1971, 52% of people lived in household with dependent children. This figure fell consistently to 47% in 1981, 41% in 1991, 39% in 2001 and finally 36% in 2007. In comparison percentage of people living without their children increased from 19% in 1971 to 25% in both 2001 and 2007.

The percentage of one person household increased throughout the period from 6% in 1971, 8 % in 1981, 11% in 1991 to 12% in both 2001 and 2007 whereas, household with non dependent children showed little overal change .Their percentage started with 10% in 1971 which then reached a peak of 11% in 1991 before falling t 9% in 2001 and 2007.In contrast lone parent household increased from 4% in 1971, 6% in 1981,10% in 1991 and 12% in both 2001 and 2007.
