Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, as it contains only 127 words, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While the student attempts to summarise the table by mentioning some trends—such as the increase in one-person and lone-parent households, and the decline in households with dependent children—the data reporting is frequently inaccurate or confused. For instance, the statement that 'dependent children is 11 time greater than lone parent' in 1971 is incorrect (the figures are 52% and 4% respectively). Furthermore, the overview is extremely weak and fails to clearly present the overall trends across the 36-year period. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed with limited and underdeveloped ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The response exhibits significant issues with cohesion, paragraphing, and logical progression. The essay is divided into short, disjointed paragraphs that lack clear organizational structure. While some basic cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'To begin', 'First of all', 'In contrast', 'In conclusion'), their usage is often awkward or mechanically forced. Additionally, referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information. Ideas are not sequenced in a logical progression, and the lack of proper punctuation further disrupts the readability of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The lexical resource is very limited and basic, with frequent vocabulary errors and unnatural collocations. Examples such as 'the phenomenon of household people', 'rise in numbers of household individuals', and 'remained stop' demonstrate a lack of precision and inappropriate word choice. The student repeats basic vocabulary (e.g., 'rise', 'decline', 'type', 'children') throughout the response. Spelling errors are minimal, but the range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey precise meaning or meet higher band standards.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement, tense usage, and article omission (e.g., 'least number in household type is lone parent', 'one person type rise', 'number of children grow most'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are poorly handled, with awkward phrasing causing frequent difficulty for the reader. Error-free sentences are rare.
