Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers several main features from the table, such as the increase in one-person households from 6% to 12% and the decrease in households with dependent children from 52% to 36%. However, the student includes personal speculation and outside assumptions that are not presented in the data, such as claiming the statistics show 'government's birth control campaigns work well' or that lone parents are 'correlational to increased percentage of divorces.' Furthermore, the response lacks a clear, cohesive overall summary or overview of the main trends. While it attempts to address the prompt, the inclusion of outside commentary and lack of a proper overview keeps this criterion at a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text employs basic sequencing devices like 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' 'Thirdly,' and 'Finally' to structure the points. However, the paragraphing is poor, as the entire body of the report is clumped together with erratic line breaks, and there is no introductory overview paragraph. Cohesive devices are used in a somewhat mechanical way, and referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'there is a rise from 10% to 11% from 1971-1991, after that it face declined to 9%'). The progression of ideas lacks sophisticated logical flow due to sentence-level fragmentation and conversational insertions like 'Here are some intresting facts that are shown by studies by reading patterns.' Overall, the organizational structure aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and spelling throughout the text. Examples include 'houshold', 'great britan', 'intresting', 'prefered', 'childrens' (used incorrectly as a plural noun multiple times), 'campaighns', and 'face declined'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'correlational', but uses it inaccurately in context. While basic meaning is generally conveyed, the frequent spelling and morphological errors restrict the score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple clauses with frequent structural errors. There are multiple issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'there are some significant changes occur', 'The percentage of one person family system are in inclined', and 'the ratio of dependent childrens are 52%'. Punctuation is also problematic, including unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. Complex sentences are rarely attempted successfully, and errors frequently cause strain for the reader. These issues place the grammar firmly in the Band 4.5 to 5.0 range, warranting a Band 5.0.
