Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover the main trends in the table, noting the decline in households with dependent children and the increases in one-person, no-children, and lone-parent households. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that the one-person household figure in 1971 was 7%, whereas the table clearly shows it was 6%. Furthermore, the description of the overall trends contains confused phrasing, such as 'the major difference was occurred', and the body paragraphs fail to systematically synthesise the data, relying instead on a fragmented list of isolated figures for specific years. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the lack of precision and under-development of key comparisons place this response at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response has a basic structural layout, including an introduction and body paragraphs, but overall progression is lacking. The second sentence of the overview contains a severe typo ('househo;d') and a garbled description of the non-dependent children trend: 'then the last two decades were also calculated as identical while decrease in the shift.' Paragraphing is poorly handled, as the body paragraphs do not group information logically by category or time period effectively; instead, they jump abruptly between years without clear cohesive ties. Cohesive devices are used mechanically ('Moreover', 'In 1971', 'In 1981'), and referencing between sentences is occasionally confusing. This meets the criteria for Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent lexical errors and awkward collocations. Examples include 'alteration' instead of 'change' or 'trend', 'the major difference was occurred', and 'househo;d' (typo). The student attempts some less common phrasing such as 'marginally declined' and 'substantial increase', but word choices are often imprecise, such as referring to children as 'toddlers' ('with no toddlers was 23%') when the data refers to people in households with no children. Spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable throughout, though they do not completely obscure the general meaning, which aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and attempted complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as passive voice misuse ('the major difference was occurred' and 'increase has been measured'), incorrect prepositions, and faulty relative clauses ('the household types regarding one person was 7%'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent structural errors cause strain for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band. Because errors occur consistently alongside a limited range of reliable complex forms, a score of 5.0 is appropriate.
