Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response covers some of the main trends shown in the table, noting the increases in lone-person and lone-parent households, as well as the decrease in households with dependent children. However, the response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, stopping at only 121 words, which significantly limits the fullness of the overview and reporting of data. There are also a few minor data omissions, such as the incomplete final sentence ('from 52% to 36'). Because of the under-length penalty and incomplete development, this falls into the lower-middle band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text attempts a logical structure, beginning with an introductory overview and following with body details. However, paragraphing is extremely poor, with the entire body text lumped into a single run-on block or awkward paragraph breaks. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or awkwardly ('As the data revealed', 'In addition,', 'Meanwhile,'), and punctuation errors further disrupt the logical flow of ideas. Overall progression is hindered by these structural and cohesive flaws.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student attempts some less common vocabulary relevant to data description, such as 'proportions', 'substantially', and 'marginally'. However, there are frequent word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'had recorded from', 'noticeable decreased had seen on', and 'dropped down'. Spelling is also an issue, with errors like 'signifiicant'. The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task, but lexical control is weak throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response contains a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are heavily flawed by awkward passive constructions and tense confusion (e.g., 'had recorded', 'had seen on', 'had a signifiicant increased'). Punctuation and capitalization are erratic, and missing words in clauses (such as the cut-off ending 'from 52% to 36') frequently impede the reader's understanding. Error density is high relative to the short length of the text.
