Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the given years. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the dominant category (couples with dependent children) and the notable upward trends in single-person and lone-parent households. Key figures are accurately cited, such as couples with dependent children falling from 52% in 1971 to 36% in 2007, and one-person households doubling from 6% to 12%. However, there is a factual error in the final paragraph regarding couples with non-dependent children: the text states this figure peaked at 12% in 2001 and 2007, whereas the table clearly shows it at 9% in those years (10% in 1971). Despite this minor inaccuracy, the overall response effectively addresses the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear logical organization with an overall progression from the introduction and overview into detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related categories. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'By contrast', 'By comparison', and 'Similarly' are employed to connect ideas, though some referencing and transitional links are slightly mechanical or repetitive ('in both 2001 and 2007' is repeated several times). Additionally, there is a minor cohesion slip with a missing subject and fragmented punctuation in the final sentence ('it stood at 10% in 1971, then peak substantially...'). Overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with appropriate topic-specific terms such as 'proportion', 'households', 'dependent children', and 'lone-parent'. The student attempts less common vocabulary ('illustrartes', 'considerably', 'substantially'), but there are noticeable spelling errors ('illustrartes', 'liviing') and word-form/collocation errors (e.g., 'the proportion of one person started to 6%' missing the noun 'households', and 'then peak substantially' using the present tense instead of the past 'peaked'). Lexical range allows the message to be communicated clearly, but inaccuracies prevent it from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'Although their percentage fell continuously' and 'In 1971, couples with dependent children represented 52% of households, this figure then decline considerably'. However, there are several grammatical errors, including tense inconsistencies ('decline' instead of 'declined', 'rise' instead of 'rose', 'peak' instead of 'peaked'), a comma splice in the third paragraph ('...of households, this figure then decline...'), and a missing subject in 'started to 6%'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured, and simple sentences are generally accurate.
