Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main features of the table, noting overall trends such as the increase in one-person, no-children, and lone-parent households, alongside the decrease in couple households with dependent children. However, there are significant factual inaccuracies in data reading and confusion regarding the categories. For instance, the student mistakenly identifies 'no dependent children' as starting at 52 percent in 1971, when 52 percent actually represents couples with dependent children. Furthermore, data for non-dependent children is misreported. While an overview is present, the misinterpretation of core categories and data points places the response within Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs addressing specific categories. Cohesive devices and transition markers such as 'overall', 'At first', and 'Turning to' are used to structure the response. However, referencing is sometimes unclear, and punctuation errors disrupt the logical flow—for example, awkward comma splices and stray punctuation like 'no children and lone parent , this kind of houshould increase'. Paragraphing is present, but overall progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and cohesion failures, fitting a Band 5 profile.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent misspellings and imprecise word choices. Terms such as 'familly', 'houshould', 'depend', 'flactuated', and 'become' demonstrate a limited lexical range. The student attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'proportion' and 'respectively', but frequent lexical errors ('this kind of houshould increase', 'no dependent children houshould is the most popular') restrict the response to Band 5. The student also struggles with word formation and accurate collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex or compound structures are frequently faulty or disjointed, as seen in 'overall, It is clear that one person, no children and lone parent , this kind of houshould increase over the period, while depend and no depend children type of houshould are decreasing'. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and punctuation, which occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. These persistent inaccuracies place the grammar score at Band 5.
