Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to report the main features of the table, noting key trends such as the increase in one-person and lone-parent households and the decrease in households with dependent children. However, there are significant factual errors and misinterpretations of the data. For instance, the student states 'from 1071 to 2007' (a typo for 1971), and claims that 'In couple and one-family households family had no data given in table', which is incorrect as the table provides data for couples under various sub-categories. Furthermore, the overview is weak and confused. These inaccuracies and the lack of a clear, fully developed summary pull the score down to a 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific categories. However, the progression is frequently hindered by clumsy transitional phrases such as 'At first,' 'On the other hands,' and 'ended years.' Cohesive devices are repetitive and mechanical, relying heavily on basic linkers like 'and' or 'then.' Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within sentences is weak, leading to a choppy reading experience. This performance aligns well with Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, heavily relying on words directly copied from the prompt such as 'households,' 'family,' 'percentage,' and 'increased.' There are frequent lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'remaining two was on decreasing level,' 'started at 19% in starting,' and 'ended years' instead of 'final year' or 'the end of the period.' The range of vocabulary is limited and inadequate for a higher band, restricting the score to a 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that result in grammatical errors. Examples of errors include 'the types of household family changed in great britian' (capitalisation and phrasing errors), 'it's remain same' (tense and auxiliary verb errors), and 'lone parent family date started' (word form error for 'data'). Punctuation and verb tense consistency are problematic throughout the text. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 5.0.
