Student answer (Band 5.0)

The table illustrates the proportion of variation in three household types in Great Britain between1971 and 2007.

Overall, it is clear that the one- family household are further divided into 3 parts and depicted an upward trend over the period, whereas the opposite trend was true for lone parent in the begning of the the period. Additionally, one person was not highest but equal to lone parent at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, stopping abruptly at only 77 words with an incomplete sentence ("Looking at the details,"). Because the text is severely under-length and incomplete, it can only address the task partially. While the opening attempts an overview and mentions some general trends, key data points and comparisons across the full time period are missing, limiting the development of the response. Under IELTS marking rules, severe under-length significantly penalises the Task Achievement score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text attempts a logical structure with an introductory sentence and an overview paragraph ("Overall, it is clear that..."). However, the response breaks off mid-sentence at the start of the body details ("Looking at the details,"), preventing any meaningful progression or paragraph development. Cohesive devices such as "whereas" and "Additionally" are used correctly in the first two sentences, but the overall organization is cut short, resulting in a fragmentary structure that lacks a coherent body.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate basic range of vocabulary for discussing data trends, using terms such as "proportion", "depicted an upward trend", and "opposite trend". However, there are notable lexical and spelling errors, such as "begning" instead of "beginning", "the the" duplication, and awkward phrasing like "one person was not highest but equal to lone parent". The limited length of the response restricts a fuller demonstration of lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts some complex structures, such as using subordinate clauses with "whereas". However, there are grammatical inaccuracies and awkward syntactic choices, including subject-verb agreement issues ("the one- family household are further divided") and missing articles ("one person was not highest"). Furthermore, the sentence structure breaks down entirely at the end of the text. While simple sentences are generally understandable, control over complex forms is inconsistent.
