Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustrated table depicts information of changes in some household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007. Respectively, the households are One person, one-family household (couple, no-children, dependent children and non- dependent) and lone parent.
Overall, most of the categories experienced an increase in percentage, while a major change was noticed in the households of one person and the lone parent which dramatically rose. In contrast, the household of one-family (dependent children) accounted for a decreased percentage.
In 1971, the households which consisted of one person and lone parent were at 6% and 4%, respectively, and both sharply increased to 12% in 2007. Moreover, one of the categories of one-family households (no-children) moderately increased to 25% in 2007.
On the other hand, in one-family households the category of dependent children proportion fell to 36% in 2007. Meanwhile, the non-dependent children faced a slight change of 1% only in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and trends of the table from 1971 to 2007. An overview is provided, highlighting the general increase in most categories alongside significant rises for one-person and lone-parent households, and a decrease in households with dependent children. Key data points are accurately cited, such as one-person and lone-parent households starting at 6% and 4% respectively and reaching 12% in 2007, and couple households with dependent children falling to 36%. However, the overview could be slightly more fully developed regarding all overarching trends, and minor grouping details are slightly clumsy. Overall, the response meets the criteria well for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, overview paragraph, and body paragraphs focusing on contrasting trends. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', 'In 1971', and 'On the other hand'. However, the transition between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical, and paragraphing could be structured with greater precision to separate the growing categories from the declining ones more clearly. Referencing is generally functional, but the introductory sentence 'Respectively, the households are...' is somewhat awkward and disrupts the smooth progression of ideas. Nevertheless, there is a clear logical progression throughout, placing this securely at Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'dramatically rose', 'moderately increased', and 'proportion fell'. Word choice is generally appropriate, though there are some slight awkwardness and collocation issues, such as 'depicts information of changes' instead of 'depicts changes in' and 'the household of one-family' instead of 'one-family households'. Spelling is accurate throughout. While the range demonstrates sufficient flexibility to convey precise data changes, occasional lexical inaccuracies prevent it from reaching a higher band. Therefore, a Band 6.5 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases successfully (e.g., 'In 1971, the households which consisted of one person...'). There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'information of changes' and 'the non-dependent children faced a slight change of 1% only in 2007' (which misinterprets the non-dependent children data slightly and uses awkward syntax), but punctuation and sentence structures are generally well-controlled. The majority of sentences are free of serious errors that impede communication. This performance aligns well with the descriptors for Band 6.5.
