Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the table, making relevant comparisons throughout the response. An overall trend is identified in the introduction, highlighting the main movements such as the increase in couple households with no children and the decrease in those with dependent children. Key data points are accurately cited from the table, such as the peak of couple households with dependent children at 52% in 1971 and falling to 36% in 2007, as well as the rise in one-person and lone-parent households. The response covers the key trends well without significant data omissions, demonstrating a solid understanding of the visual information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organized logically into clear paragraphs, moving from an introductory overview to specific details categorized by household type. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, with transition phrases like 'Turning to', 'With regard to', and 'Furthermore' helping to guide the reader through the data. However, there are minor cohesion and referencing issues, such as occasional awkward transitions between sentences or slightly repetitive structural patterns in listing data points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the visual data, maintaining a clear overall progression throughout the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to data reporting such as 'steady upward trend', 'gradual decrease', 'accounted for', and 'stood at'. There are some successful attempts at less common vocabulary items and descriptive phrases. However, some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices occur, such as writing 'couple with no children' instead of 'couples with no children' or repeating certain phrasing. Spelling and word choice errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to the Band 6.5 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more complex comparative clauses. There are several error-free sentences, particularly when reporting percentages and straightforward trends. However, some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing persist, such as 'until the final year' where contextually it continued or plateaued, and missing pluralization in phrases like 'couple with no children' instead of 'couples'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but minor grammatical inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
