Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by selecting some main features and figures from the table, such as the data for single-person households and dependent children. However, there are significant flaws in task completion. First, the introductory sentence is ungrammatical and incomplete ('the percentage of people... live in Great Britain'). Second, the student misinterprets the data categories, claiming that 'the one family household and couple household proportion was not given,' when these are clearly presented in the table. Furthermore, the final sentence contains a factual contradiction regarding lone-parent households, stating that the percentage was 'low in 1971... but it was decreased with the time period aproximately 12%'—whereas the data actually shows an increase from 4% to 12%. Because of these data misreadings, omissions, and inaccurate reporting, the response falls into Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response lacks a proper paragraph structure, being presented almost as a single block of text with very short, choppy sentences. Progression is difficult to follow because of poor cohesive devices and abrupt transitions between data points (e.g., jumping from single-person households directly to family types without clear signposting). While some basic linkers like 'However' and 'while' are used, referencing is often confusing or inaccurate. Paragraphing is not used sufficiently and appropriately to group related ideas, leading to a disorganized overall arrangement. These issues place the response firmly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'percentage', 'value', 'table', and 'households'. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'householold', 'houshold', and 'aproximately'. The student also misuses vocabulary when attempting to describe trends, such as stating that a percentage 'decreased' when the data clearly shows it increased from 4% to 12%. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, meaning it only reaches Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response shows a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly constructed compound sentences, and attempts at complex structures often result in serious grammatical errors and run-on sentences, such as 'Dependent children householold the value of this household was above from all other its value is around 52%...' Punctuation is frequently neglected, and there are frequent errors in verb tenses and prepositions ('decreased with the time period'). These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
