Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the table, such as highlighting that dependent children formed the highest percentage at 52% in 1971 before dropping to 36%, and noting the upward trend for one-person households and lone parents. An overview is attempted, stating that the trends showed fluctuations across years and correctly identifying the extremes. However, some details are slightly imprecise or under-developed, such as stating that 'trend showed fluctuations in all years' when several categories followed steady directional paths, such as the gradual rise of one-person households or the continuous decline of dependent children. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, satisfying the requirements for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introductory overview into body paragraphs detailing specific categories. Paragraphing is attempted to group ideas, though paragraph breaks feel somewhat arbitrary or choppy. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'Probing ahead to further details'. However, some cohesive links feel mechanical or awkward in context, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the abrupt transition between sentences in the final paragraph. Progression lacks complete smoothness, meaning ideas do not always flow effortlessly from one to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to data reporting such as 'percentages', 'gradually increased', and 'declined'. However, there are notable word-choice errors, lexical inaccuracies, and typographical mistakes throughout the text, such as 'replace' instead of 'change', 'Departent' instead of 'Dependent', 'ration' instead of 'ratio', 'different' instead of 'difference', and 'stoped' instead of 'stopped'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success, and these frequent slips occasionally draw attention, restricting the vocabulary score to a basic level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative phrases such as 'as compared to others' and 'whereas, in 2007 household was higher with 25%'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article use, such as 'around 6% household was covered' and 'in term of no children', as well as tense inconsistencies and awkward prepositional phrases like 'remaind constant in 1981'. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur often enough to prevent the writing from achieving a higher band.
