Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the given time period. An overview is successfully attempted at the beginning, noting that families with dependent children were the highest throughout while lone parents were the lowest. However, some parts of the data are treated with minor inaccuracies or under-developed analysis. For instance, the description of household types omits a comprehensive overview of overall trends for all categories, and some data points are slightly generalised. To move to a higher band, the response should provide a more fully developed selection of key features with sharper comparative analysis, ensuring all major trends and overall shifts are fully highlighted without relying on overly mechanical reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression, moving from an introductory overview into body paragraphs detailing specific household categories. Paragraphing is utilised adequately to separate different trends, and basic cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Whereas', 'Similar to this', and 'However' are employed to connect ideas. However, referencing and cohesive links are sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Another kind of household who grew steadily', which disrupts the natural flow. To achieve a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between sentences is smoother and less repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items and descriptive verbs and phrases such as 'gradual rise', 'continuous dip', and 'sharp decline'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors (e.g., 'dispalys', 'Briatin', 'higheset', 'doesnot') and occasional issues with word choice and word form (e.g., 'house kind', 'total house kind'). These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score. To improve to a higher band, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, improve precision in word choice and collocations, and eliminate spelling mistakes through careful proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and comparative statements. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'One person family... were', 'family with no children also inclined', 'results with 41%'), missing articles (e.g., 'in first year', 'with mere 4%'), and incorrect prepositions or verb forms. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur regularly throughout the text. To reach a higher band, the student must increase control over grammatical structures, ensure accurate subject-verb agreement, and produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences.
