Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially because it falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 101 words. While it attempts to present an overview and highlights some key features from the table—such as the drop in households with dependent children from 52% to 36% and the rise in one-person and lone-parent households—the lack of length prevents a fully developed response. The summary covers the main trends correctly, but additional categories from the data, such as non-dependent children or couples with no children, are either underdeveloped or missing entirely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement and logical progression, successfully moving from an introductory statement to an overview, followed by specific data points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to link concepts, as seen with phrases like 'In 1971', 'In contrast', and 'Similarly'. However, cohesion can feel slightly mechanical, and referencing between sentences could be smoother to fully achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends and percentages using terms such as 'percentage', 'proportion', 'doubled', and 'rose'. There are some minor spelling and typographic errors, such as 'hosehold' instead of 'household'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items with general success, but the overall lexical range remains somewhat limited and repetitive, which prevents a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative or introductory clauses adequately. There are some grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('52% people' instead of '52% of people') and a punctuation spacing error ('1971,52%'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily understand the intended meaning.
