The graph compares the change in few household types between 1971 and 2007 in Great Britain.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While it attempts to report on the household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007, the selection of data is erratic and fails to clearly highlight the overall trends or main features. Furthermore, there are inaccuracies in data interpretation, such as stating that 'couple and one-family households were at 0%', which misreads the structure of the table. The overview is weak, merely noting the highest and lowest points without capturing the broader shifts over the 36-year period. To reach a higher level, the response needs to systematically select key features, provide a coherent overview of the main trends, and accurately report the data without misinterpreting the table's categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response shows some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression. The ideas are presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, moving back and forth between years without a logical flow. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore', they are often repetitive or mechanically applied. Paragraphing is also inadequate, as the entire body of the report is cramped into a single, dense paragraph after a two-sentence introduction, making it difficult for the reader to follow the argument. To improve, the writer should structure the response into logical paragraphs based on time periods or categories, and use a wider variety of cohesive ties to ensure smooth transitions between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information. The writer attempts some less common terms and phrases, such as 'highest proportion' and 'lone-parent', but there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, including 'lane-parent' instead of 'lone-parent' and awkward phrasing like 'families in which only one individual live'. Spelling mistakes and inaccurate word forms cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to expand their lexical range with more precise vocabulary related to data reporting (such as verbs and adverbs of change) and pay closer attention to accurate word formation and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple and repetitive patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to awkward constructions and grammatical errors. Examples include 'it was noticed the family with dependent children was at highest proportion' and 'were increased around 2% each'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'individual live' instead of 'individuals live'. These errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and obscure the precise meaning of the data. Incorporating a wider variety of accurate complex structures with reliable control over grammar and punctuation is necessary for improvement.
