Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The tables demonstrate proportions between various types of families in Great Britain during the period between 1971 and 2007, by giving data every decade.

Overall, such types of households are provided, as one person, couples with or without children , and lone parent. Increasing of numbers are shown by one-person families, couples without or with dependent children, while decreasing of the percentage have non-dependent children's parents.

The number of one-person households such as one person and lone parent has significally increased during the period, showing doubled numbers in the end of the period. The same tendency is demonstrated by numbers of couples wothout kids, where the share of 19 per cent in 1971 has grown to 25 in 2007.

At the same time proportion of families with children has fallen from 52 to 36 for the couples with dependent children, and from 10 to 9 for famioies with non-dependent kids accordingly, which is not as dramatic.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses the main parts of the task by reporting key features and making relevant comparisons across the given years. The overview correctly highlights the general upward trend in one-person and couple households alongside the downward trend in households with dependent and non-dependent children. However, some parts of the data are slightly under-developed or imprecise. For example, grouping 'one person and lone parent' together as having 'doubled numbers' does not fully reflect the specific trajectories shown in the table, as lone-person households rose from 6 to 12 percent while one-person households grew from 6 to 12 percent at different paces. Overall, the content is relevant and covers the core information, meeting the expectations for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at organizing information into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview paragraph, and concluding with body details. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as 'Overall', 'At the same time', and 'accordingly'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen in the slightly disjointed flow between sentences in the second body paragraph. Paragraphing is present and helps structure the response, but smoother transitions and more precise referencing would elevate the cohesion further.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items such as 'proportions', 'tendency', and 'share'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'significally' instead of 'significantly', 'wothout' instead of 'without', and 'famioies' instead of 'families'. Additionally, phrases like 'Increasing of numbers' demonstrate awkward word formation and limited lexical precision. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the score to the current level because of frequent slips in spelling and word form.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices, such as 'such types of households are provided, as one person...' which contains incorrect punctuation and awkward structure, and 'while decreasing of the percentage have non-dependent children's parents', which suffers from subject-verb agreement issues and incorrect prepositions. Punctuation errors, such as missing commas and stray spaces, are also present. These errors occasionally disrupt the reading flow, but the meaning remains generally clear.
